Full Day Itinerary:
Departure time: 5:30 am
Return time: 6:00 pm
Duration: 12½ hours (including 1 hour break for lunch)
Trails:
Meandrica, Universal, Quebrada Bonita and Araceas
Description: A full day hike that starts at the Meandrical trail, a one way path with five different micro-ecosystems ranging from 25-year-old pasture fields to secondary growth forests aging more than 200 years. We’ll also visit a swampy lagoon, which is surrounded by 125-feet-tall forest. After a few hours birding, the tour breaks for a cold drink and lunch at a nearby restaurant (not included with the tour rate).
Following lunch, we'll visit the Tarcoles River bridge and enjoy a boat trip to the mangroves and adjacent forests. Here, we'll view an array of long-legged, long-necked water birds, kingfishers, woodpeckers and mangrove specialties such as Mangrove Hummingbird, Vireo, Warbler, Panama and Scrub Flycatchers, and if we’re lucky, perhaps the Rufous necked Woodrail
Shortly after, we’ll visit the highest canopy forest with a semi-open understory where the remaining trails are loops. Dimmer light conditions make birding a little more difficult however more birding rarities appear at dusk.
Tour includes professional bird guide and Carara National Park and Tarcoles Area Bird Checklist.
Rate: $120 (maximum 6 people) plus additional $25 per person for the Mangrove boat trip
